ABOUT SAXON
Raised in Tucson and now working from a Phoenix studio, Saxon Michael Burns creates architectural, sculptural jewelry in sterling silver. Each piece is handmade, with careful attention to proportion, surface, movement, and the individuality of its stone or setting.
His metalwork has been shown in juried exhibitions across Illinois; he won an award for his Niemeyer Ring No. 1 in 2023.
Beyond the bench, Saxon also works in photography and poetry — companion practices that sharpen the eye he brings to silver.
The Organ Pipe Ring started as a chandelier. Saxon spotted it on television — a dense cluster of cylindrical forms hanging in midair — and couldn't stop thinking about it. The result is a ring that looks like a miniature cityscape, an arrangement of organ pipes, or an organ-pipe cactus reaching toward the sky.
Named for Brazilian modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer, the series studies the sweep, weight, and negative space of architecture at ring scale. Niemeyer Ring No. 1 received Melissa’s Gift Comrades in Art Award at the 2023 Parkland College Art and Design Student Juried Exhibition.

A clean, narrow sterling silver band with flush-set stones — understated on its own, striking in a stack.
The band is formed from sterling silver wire and the stones are set flush into the surface, sitting level with the metal rather than raised above it. It's a precise setting style that gives the ring a smooth, modern profile and keeps it comfortable against neighboring rings when stacked.

This ring started as a chandelier.
Saxon spotted it on television — a dense cluster of cylindrical forms hanging in midair — and couldn't stop thinking about it. The result is this: a ring that looks like a miniature cityscape, an arrangement of organ pipes, or an organ-pipe cactus reaching toward the sky, depending on the light and who's looking.
The copper cluster is built by hand from individual tubes, soldered together in rows, then soldered to a copper base plate. The ring itself is a hollow-form construction of sterling silver wire and sheet, fabricated at the bench. The pipes are then soldered to the ring — a process requiring precise heat control across two different metals.
The verdigris patina is achieved by heating the metal and applying cupric nitrate and liver of sulfur, building up the teal and turquoise tones with craggy black accents. No two pieces will patina identically. The finish will continue to evolve with wear, deepening and shifting over time the way all honest metal does.
This is not a subtle ring. It's a conversation, a sculpture, and a piece of jewelry all at once.

Modeled after the prickly pear cactus.
The desert's most generous plant, rendered in metal. Sculpted copper pads rise from a sterling silver band, blooming with verdigris patina the color of monsoon-season desert — and a single lab ruby set like a ripe prickly pear fruit.

This ring has been to a gallery. Twice.
Niemeyer Ring No. 1 was selected for the Parkland College Art and Design Student Juried Exhibition at Giertz Gallery in 2023, and the following year for the Illinois Community College Juried Exhibition at Governors State University Visual Arts Gallery.
It is named for Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect whose swooping concrete forms changed what buildings were allowed to be. Saxon drew on the sweeping curves of Niemeyer's Brazilian modernism — twin domes rising from a vast flat platform — and came home and made this.
The two dome elements are formed by dapping: a silversmithing technique in which sheet metal is shaped into a hemisphere using a dapping block and punch. Each dome is then soldered to a silver tube. Holes are drilled through the shank, the tube is set into them, soldered in place, then cut back and filed flush. It's precise, unhurried work — the kind that doesn't show when it's done right, but holds everything together.
The result is a ring that is unmistakably architectural. Chunky, considered, and completely handmade.
This is a made-to-order piece. Your ring will be made fresh at the bench in Phoenix, Arizona, to your size.

Exhibited alongside the award-winning Niemeyer Ring No. 1, No. 2 is the quietest piece in the series — a flared trumpet of sterling and fine silver balanced on a hand-fabricated band.
Saxon built the Niemeyer series around the concrete curves of Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyer: sweeping, weightless forms that shouldn't stand up, but do. This one is all about negative space and lift.

The heavyweight of the Niemeyer series. No. 3 sets a broad hand-fabricated silver disc — pierced with a single aperture — over a flared trumpet stem and a squared, architectural band. It uses a serious amount of silver, and it looks like it.
Inspired by Oscar Niemeyer's boldest concrete volumes and made to be worn as sculpture, this is a companion to the award-winning Niemeyer Ring No. 1.

Most rings sit straight on your finger. This one doesn't — and that's the point.
Saxon designed the main stone to sit slightly askew, tilted to the side rather than centered upright. It's a small decision that changes everything about how the ring wears and how it catches the eye. On your hand it reads as confident and a little unexpected, the way good jewelry should.
The ring is built by hand using traditional fabrication techniques — no casting, no molds. Saxon laid out the individual elements on a sheet of sterling silver, cut them out, and soldered the components together piece by piece. The shank is formed from a split double round wire, soldered to the base. The whole piece was then oxidized in liver of sulfur, hand-buffed to bring the silver back up on the high points while leaving the recesses dark, and finished by setting the two black onyx stones — a larger oval as the centerpiece and a smaller teardrop alongside it.
The result is a ring that looks like it came out of the desert — dark, graphic, a little worn-in, completely handmade.

Three bands. One ring. The kind of thing you can't stop moving on your finger.
A rolling ring works because the bands are truly interlocked — not attached, not hinged, but woven through each other so they move independently while staying together. Saxon makes these by forming two sterling silver bands and soldering them around a third, locking all three into a single piece that rolls and shifts as you wear it.
It's a centuries-old design, and the reason it has lasted is simple: it's deeply satisfying to wear. The three bands catch light differently as they move. It stacks beautifully with other rings or wears equally well on its own.
Made to order in your size, entirely in sterling silver.

Howlite is a stone that looks like it's already been somewhere. White with grey veining running through it like a topographic map — it has the quiet drama of marble without the formality.
The large front links and the oversized circular ring that suspends the pendant are all fabricated by hand from sterling silver wire. The pendant itself is held in an alternative prong setting, also made from wire, which cradles the stone while keeping it visible from all angles. The delicate links that run around the back of the neck are commercial sterling silver chain — chosen because the front of this necklace is doing enough work and the back shouldn't compete.
The result is a necklace that's bold at the front and effortless everywhere else.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece. There is only one.
